The beginning of 2008 signals the end of a great year for gaming. With more titles for the PS3 released in 07 then 06 we were treated to a sensory explosion of new releases from A – Z. There’s no reason to hold back on what we’ve seen and believe me when I say our picks for the top 10 PS3 titles is most impressive.
Without delay - lets get started!
10) Kane & Lynch: Dead Men
Borrowing from the stylish grit of Michael Mann’s films, this third-person-shooter has a gripping storyline, chock full of visceral run-and-gun action, and an innovative multiplayer mode in which players can betray one another mid-mission.
While the graphics don’t look next-gen and the gameplay isn’t hiccup-free, the hard-boiled plot offers a rewarding experience. This one isn’t for the faint of heart, with more than its share of violence and expletive-laden dialogue - mostly doled out by the pugnacious and morally repugnant titular anti-heroes.
9) Resistance: Fall of Man
Nothing beats a good old FPS involving mutants, monsters or aliens and this title takes the cake. From the moment you pop the game in until the moment you complete the game your finger is constantly on the trigger blowing away an experiment gone wrong.
Resistance doesn’t attempt anything wildly different than other first-person shooters out there, but by offering a strong selection of interesting weapons, plenty of ruthless foes to shoot them at, good level design, and an excellent presentation, it accomplishes what most such games fail to do.
The story is told from the perspective of a different officer who briefly interacts with Hale during his missions against a seemingly unstoppable enemy. Her solemn narration is easy enough to follow but not particularly engaging because by her own admission, she doesn’t really know what’s going on in Hale’s head or what’s going on with the Chimera. Brief but nicely done cinematic cutscenes using the game’s 3D engine at least serve to give Nathan Hale a believably concerned look between battles.
8) Unreal Tournament III
Unreal Tournament III was an amazing PC release, but being that most computers weren’t powerful enough to run it, this represents their chance to play one of the fastest, prettiest, manic online games out there.
Unreal Tournament III on the PS3 runs shocking well, unlike other console versions of the series. It also supports both USB mouse and keyboard play as well as the Sixaxis PS3 controller. Epic did an amazing job of customizing play options to work with the PS3 controller, and this may be the best console first person shooter configuration to date. Gory and violent, while extremely fun, this is not a game for the little ones.
7) Guitar Hero III Legends of Rock
What, no Rock Band? Here me out, while I too love the Rock Band, it’s simply too risky. Too many broken guitars means you should wait for them to sort out their manufacturing and buy it in the spring. So, if you were wondering if you should get Rock Band or Guitar Hero III, the choice is easy, Guitar Hero III is not only excellent, but it also works.
With a new developer many were frightened of what the game would become, let me squash those fears, Guitar Hero III rocks as hard as the previous games. Throw in new boss battles and competitive modes and you have an excellent sequel.
Guitar Hero III is not as pretty or as varied as Rock Band, but it costs less and works more often, which seals its place on this list.
6) Half-Life 2: The Orange Box
Let’s see, for the price of one game you get five, and each one is stellar. Yeah, that happens every so... well never.

The Half-Life branded games alone are more than worth the price of admission, especially if you missed them the first time around. Portal is this year’s watercooler game, the one everyone is talking about. Team Fortress 2 proves that you can have serious multiplayer fun without having the dark mutants gone wild look of most online first person shooters.
The Orange Box is fun on so many levels that it was a strong contender for Game of the Year.
