Now why would you want an external boot drive? Well how about having a 750 GB hard drive for you PS3? Why limit yourself to small laptop hard drives?

Granted this tutorial is being done with completely ghetto tools, the setup can be made to look allot better with a hard drive enclosure case which can be picked up for rather cheap. (Here is an example for $24 bucks)
