Sixaxis LED Mod
Posted by PS3_Master, 285 days ago

This tutorial will go through the steps of placing an LED in your PS3 SIXAXIS controller. While the mod is relatively simple to complete, there are a lot of parts in the controller that if damaged will completely ruin your PS3 gaming experience. Complete this mod at your own risk!

Required Tools and Parts:

  • 3 volts LED - (3mm recommended / 5mm) Any color - $0.10
  • 1/4 watts 47 Ohms Resister (The color code for this is "Yellow - Purple - Black") - $0.25
  • 30 gauge wires - $3.00
  • PS3 controller - $50.00
  • small Philip screw driver - $3.00

All parts needed for this mod can be picked up at any electronics store.

Step 1: Open and Disassembling the controller:

Before you begin, make sure power to the controller is off. (Please REMEMBER how you disassembled the controller! Its not easy to put back together!) Remove the five screws in the device, making sure to place them somewhere safe. Lift the top of the controller where the R1, R2, L1 and L2 buttons are located, and push upwards. There is a clip holding the controller together by the start, select and PS3 Home buttons are located. Be sure not to break this clip while pulling the controller apart.

Disconnect the battery from the unit by removing the power wire. You will be left with two plastic braces for the battery that can also be removed at this time.

Once the braces are removed you will be left with the controllers circuit board completely exposed. At this point you need to remove the silver screw in the center of the board (Seen at the top of the image) to remove the board itself.

Remove the plastic bezel from the board itself. This should leave you with nothing more then the controller’s analog knobs and circuit board.

You should see a thin piece of plastic covering the circuit board. These plastic needs to be removed, but do it very carefully, ensuring to unplug it from the board.

Now grab the board with the analog controller knobs. Remove them from the board. They will pop off rather easily. Looking at the image below, you will see wires connected to the board by a white piece of plastic. You will be soldering around that area (Highlighted in red).

Here is a closer look at that area. The red wire - far right is positive. This is where you will be soldering your LED’s positive lead.

Below is an image of the same board showing where you will be soldering your LED’s negative lead.
