http://www.ps3court.com/images/ps3_images.jpgMany retailers in Japan have cut the cost of the PlayStation 3 by approximately 20 percent. A drop of approximately $82.00 on the 20 GB console has been seen at many stores. This may in part be due to the lowest sales numbers since the consoles release in November. The Nintendo Wii has had strong sales in the past few weeks which may have also contributed to Sony’s drop.
With the upcoming release of many new game titles such as Full Auto 2: Battle Lines, Virtua Fighter 5 and Sonic the Hedge Hog, PlayStation 3 sales are expected to rebound.
With the purported price drop in Japan, many North American consumers have been left wondering if the same drop will be seen on the east side of the Pacific. The answer is no. In an interview with Game Informer Magazine, Jack Tretton of SCE America stated there will be no price drop on the console until at lease June of 2008. The reason being lays with the cost of research and development which was extremely high on the next gen console.

I may have to hold off on getting one until then. Really don't see any reason to get a PS3 at the moment.

Oh I wish i knew that. I sold mine on craigslist for $60 lol
To be honest im surprised they even plan to make a price drop 18 months from now. I expected them to never drop the price. This is a quote from Wikipedia:
The initial production cost is estimated to be US$805.85 for the 20 GB model and US$840.35 for the 60 GB model.
And the MSRP is $499 and $599. God only knows what Sony is charging distributors per unit, but it has to be less than those prices. Even if they were the same price as the MSRP, that means Sony is losing over 200 dollars per unit.
I suppose they will eventually find ways to cut down on production costs, but no way they'll be able to cut $200+. Either way, I couldnt make it til June 2008. Not when all the uber games that are coming out this year are finally released.

Can you blame them? They are losing about a quartare of any money they make from the console anyway; the price to make it is muhc more then the selling price.

No way. Theyre not gonna cut the price 1 year after the release. The PS2 took took what almost 3 years before the price dropped? They'll wait til at least Summer 2008 before a price cut. This october/november is right around where all the good PS3 games are coming out. That will boost their sales both for games and consoles plenty. I personally know of 2 people who are waiting for certain games to come out before buying their consoles, hoping that the PS3 hardware will have been tweaked a few times by then. Sony anticipates this.
After the fall line-up is released and the dust settles from the sales, they'll prolly start toying around with a price break. But even then i wouldnt expect much of a break. If anything, they'll prolly make more of the package deals for sale. like a 20gig PS3, extra controller, and 2 games for $599.99 or something .
