So it’s been a few months now since the release of the PS3 and gamers everywhere have been glued to their seats. But many people are still unimpressed by the game selection. Four months after the release, there are still only around 20 games to choose from. However, if you’ve done your homework, you know that patience is a virtue. Here is a list of the top 5 most anticipated games of 2007.
5. Resident Evil 5

Capcom’s 5th installment of the popular series is definitely one of the highest anticipated games for the PS3. With the cutting edge technology that the PS3 offers, you will be able to count the hair on your characters head, you will see the veins bulge and pop in your enemies eyes. According to the developers, the level of detail will be something never achieved before, at least by Capcom.
4. Assassin’s Creed – August 2007

It’s not often we find a new game as intriguing as Assassin’s Creed. Ubisoft, creators of Splinter Cell, and Prince of Persia, has designed over 10,000 character animations into this game. Prince of Persia, when it was released, was arguably the finest animated game out to date, and there were only 500 character animations. That’s quite a jump in animations. You play as Altair, an assassin in medieval times, more specifically during the Crusades. Your environment is a huge, GTA style free-roaming city. You roam gathering information about your marks through various methods such as eavesdropping and pick pocketing, but stealth is a major requirement. You must disguise yourself to blend into crowds, hide in the shadows, or even scale castle walls to break into places or travel unnoticed. Needless to say, I will be one of the fanboys waiting in line for this one on its release date.
3. Final Fantasy XIII – TBA 2008

Not much is known about Square Enix’s 13th installment of the regular Final Fantasy series. Your main character is female, rumored to be named ‘Lightning’ from what is shown in available screenshots and videos, which would make sense given the trend of leading character names having something to do with the weather. They have improved upon the real-time battles that were first introduced in Final Fantasy XII, while keeping the turn-based battle format. The video trailer suggests that real-time will actually slow down, matrix style during a characters turn to act, giving you time to decide your next move, while the enemy won’t just sit by idly waiting to be attacked. But unlike FFXII, time won’t freeze when you have your battle menu up, giving more sense of reality. Personally, I am anticipating this game more so than any other, but I’m also a die hard FF fan. Unfortunately the release keeps getting pushed further back. Now its been pushed back to at least 2008, and that makes me one sad panda.
2. Grand Theft Auto IV – October 17, 2007

Very little info has been released on Grand Theft Auto IV. It has been stated that GTA4 will not be PS3 exclusive. It is to be launched for the Xbox 360 on the same day. This is not a major concern to Sony though, given that the PS3 version is going to have nearly twice the polygons and textures that the 360 version will have. And as well as GTA3 and all its expansion games have sold for the PS2, Sony expects it to sell just as well as if it were PS3 exclusive. More info will be posted on GTA4 as its released.
And the Number one most anticipated game of 2007……
Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots – October 15, 2007

Solid Snake is back in the 4th installment in the Metal Gear series. Hideo Kojima is a name well known in the gaming industry, ever since Metal Gear Solid for the PS1 wowed gamers everywhere, and according to Konami, Kojima will have just as much of a hands on role in the development of Guns of the Patriots. Not a lot is known about the plot of the game, but what is known is that many characters from previous games will be back in all their glory. Characters such as Raiden, Meryl, Colonel Campbell, Otacon, Revolver Ocelot/Liquid Snake, Vamp, even Big Boss himself will play roles. The setting is rumored to take place in the Middle East, the desert, and Snake is getting old, which shows. He’s not as ‘superhuman’ as he seemed to be in the previous installments of the series. The artificial intelligence has also been improved significantly. Furthermore, Kojima has already stated that this will be the final installment to the Metal Gear series, which allows us to infer that Solid Snake might not walk away from this mission. Time will tell.
Close but no cigar (in no particular order)
Gran Turismo HD – nothing like all those impressive cars racing at high speeds in full 1080i. Wow!
Tekken 5….and 6 for that matter – The classic fighting game with the PS3’s capabilities, I can’t wait!
Killzone – Of all the video game trailers I’ve watched for upcoming PS3 games, graphically this one is in a field of its own. Check if out if you haven’t already. The realism is absolutely unbelievable.
