I am really worried about the Price of the PS3. Many people have been predicting the price of the PS3 to be over $700! At first I didnt belive them but after I read some of their proof it actually adds up. When blu ray comes onto the market the cheapest blu ray player will be over $1000! How could sony afford to put a blu ray player in the PS3 if the blu ray drive alone costs over $1000? http://www.gamespot.com/news/6145076.html?q=blu%20ray I really hope its not that expensive!

don't worry, Sony's not stupid. they know if they sell it for more than $500, they will lose more money than make. i will be seriously pissed off at sony if they sell it for $700. that will shut away all casual gamers, which is a main part of the market (look at the rev., it is trying to get after both the hard-core and casual gamers with there controller set up.)

Yah, all evidence points to a very pricy ps3. Each ps3 costs 900 to make!

Blu Ray is simply the new type of media format that Sony is spearheading and trying to popularize. It is meant to compeat with DVD's and the upcoming HD-DVD format. There are certian advantages to Blu Ray, such as its ability to hold about 60gb of data however it is a much more expensive system. The cheapest Blu Ray player will be about $1000 while the movies will be about $30-35 each. The picture quality will be fantastic though. Anyway there are many people who have little faith in Blu Ray due to Sonys extensive Track Record with failed formats. Betamax, Mini-Disc, A-trac, A-trac3, Memory Stick(some not really failed just never caught on, at all). Hope that helped!

It's not going to cost $1000. It's not even going to cost $700. I foresee it being around $500 at launch. Why you say? Well, to begin, it does not cost $900, which was the estimate ML made. First of all, I found that report to be discredited after I added all of their numbers up myself, and came up with $800, not $900. In addition, I think some of those estimates are overbloated. One crucial factor ML didn't mention was that Blu-ray is largely Sony funded. They aren't going to be paying a ton of money to buy their own product. I honestly don't see BR drive costing more than $150.

But I won't claim I'm an expert in this area. It just doesn't add up (pun intended) to have the PS3 cost so much. Sony will sell it at cost, in order to remain competitive. They have to be able to be very close to the 360 in price, otherwise many casual gamers just looking for a new system will go for the cheaper one by default.

I wouldn't worry a whole lot. Unfortunately, the big expenses (for us) at launch, will be the games (probably going to be around $60) and the accessories.

i hope ur right, that is a pretty good analysis. i know ther ewill still be a lot of spoiled kids, or teens and adults who have jobs that would spend 700+ for this but i think it would cut out alot of the buying market for the middle class kids, or people living paycheck to paycheck. 700+ would be a lot of money for those people to spend on something liek a ps3. i look forward to it costing around 500...at least i hope.

I wont make any price projections but it seems that Sony is making a worldwide launch of the system without a shortage because they are building so many systems and wont have to pay anywhere near retail prices for components as they have gotten so much in bulk that they could afford to offer the system for a reasonable price and still make money...I hope :o

I really dont think he has said that. Sony has explictly said that they have not announced the price of the PS3 and will do so only when they are ready. However Ken Kurtaragi did say this: "The PS3 is not a game machine. We've never once called it a game machine. I'm not going to reveal the PS3's price today. I'm going to only say that it'll be expensive. I'm aware that with all these technologies, the PS3 can't be offered at a price that's targeted towards households."

I really think it will be around 600 bucks. There is no evidence pointing to it being any cheaper and there is plently pointing to it being MUCH more expensive.
