http://www.ps3court.com/images/ps3.gif What is the average development time for a console game? Well it all depends on the game, the engine it uses, and so on. That time will be cut significantly for PlayStation 3 Developers as AGEIA Corporation has announced the PS3 will be taking full advantage of their new Physics Engine, called PhysX.
AGEIA’s PhysX engine will be distributed to developers by the end of March. What does this mean? Developers won’t have to spend as much time coding effects such as debris flying around and explosions. The technology has been optimized to take full advantage of the PS3’s multi core, and will reduce PPU loads by as much as 50%
AGEIA’s founder and CEO, Manju Hedge stated that “The debut of the Playstation 3 is one of the most anticipated launches in the history of games, and we're extremely pleased that AGEIA PhysX technology will be a part of it, with AGEIA PhysX technology available for PS3, content creators will have the tools they need to create a new era in action-packed, physics-enabled games”.
When asked about PhysX Dev Kits becoming available for the PS3, Sony Computer Entertainment’s VP Dominic Mallinson said“Real-time physical simulation is the new frontier in computer entertainment, and the PlayStation 3 will lead the way with the help of AGEIA PhysX technology. Our collaboration with AGEIA will provide PlayStation 3 developers with another powerful tool enabling the creation of amazingly rich and realistic interactive entertainment”.
