Please help. My husband and I are new to online gaming, and are excited to start using it.
We just bought a new PS3 yesterday, got it all set up, and connected to our wireless internet. Right away it said we had to update. So we did, which took 3 tries. Finally it downloaded and installed. But ever since that, it's frozen on us several times, and we've had to hold the power button to shut off and restart the console.
We got so frustrated, we gave up on online gaming and swore it off. We decided we'd just resort to our regular gaming, and threw in our brand new Rock Band for PS3. It wouldn't let us play it without another update! And when we went to update it, it errored out, and will not let us do anything now without giving us an error!
We are so frustrated, and we have no idea what is wrong or what to do next. I've done some online searching, but being so new to this, I am really having a hard time finding instruction.
PLEASE HELP!

What game were you playing online? Because some online games will do that. Another reason for the freezing could be that its a new unit being used for the first time, it happened to me like 5 times when I first got it and it made me frustrated but after that it was fine.
If your getting an error while updating try going to settings > network settings and disable media servers and try it again. The media server conflicts with a lot of updates and will either sign you out or give you an error. It happens most commonly with Linksys wireless routers.
Try that out and if that doesn't work I'll keep thinking on what may be wrong.
Good luck! :)

Thanks! We just did what you suggested, and we're trying it out.
We weren't even trying to play an online game yet. All we did up to that point was get into the store to look around, tried to download a free trailer, but couldn't figure out if it downloaded or not... ?? Does it store it somewhere for us to view?
Also, we do have a Linksys wireless router, so we really hoping that's the problem.
What is the Media Servers?
I apologize if these questions are dumb... very new to this whole thing. I appreciate the help and quick responses!! :)

Thanks for the help. We do have a linksys wireless router, so we did the disable media servers. Hopefully that'll do it. Question -- what are the media servers?
We weren't even playing an online game yet when this all happened. We were just looking around in the store, then tried playing Rock Band... which asked for an update. We haven't tried that again yet.
We'll let you know if we have more problems.
THANK YOU!

The media servers are for transferring files wirelessly I believe, I'm not entirely sure though because I've never done it.

Now we've gotten an error when trying to play a BluRay disc. We played one before, and it was okay. Then we got the error. Tried again, another error. Tried a 3rd time, and it worked.
any idea why this happens, and why it's so inconsistent?
Thanks

Do you know the error code? If not try going to settings and then BD/DVD Settings and mess around with that. Because that shouldn't happen.

The error code when trying to play our blueray disc was 80029940.
BTW, we were able to download some trailers from the online store after disabling the Media Services thing -- and run the update to play Rock Band with no problems -- so it seems to have worked. It hasn't froze on us after that, either... hopefully that's done, too! I can't thank you enough for the quick response last night!! :)

Oh No problem :D
I did some research on that error code and a few websites said that it could be caused from a hairline crack in the disk. Most people got the disks from netflix as well, so if you got it from there thats most likely your problem. And then I read one from the official Playstation Forum and it said that its most likely caused by rentals. If it was bought and not rental then just try returning it for a new one.
Hope that helps as well.
