http://www.ps3court.com/images/ps3cell.jpgMercury Computer Systems began shipping the first Cell based servers earlier in the week. At this point the servers are for evaluation only, and are only being used for “medical imaging, industrial inspection, aerospace and defense, seismic processing and telecommunications.”

The companies responsible for the Cell Processor - IBM, Toshiba and Sony have extended their partnership agreement for a further five years. What’s does this all have to do with gaming your asking yourself? Well an anonymous developer working with the Cell Processor has stated One of the problems with working on the PS3 or the 360 is that the PCs you use to design ***ets are really holding you back right now - obviously the PC will catch up, but in the meantime we've been talking about whether Cell workstations could help to smooth the path.”

Even though the systems which were produced by Mercury were not created for the Digital Media Market, Sony and IBM have spoken regarding the possibility of developing them for Digital Media. This opens the door for Cell Processor based work stations being used for next generation games development
