View Full Version : PS3 is a "Next-Gen DVD Player" - Microsoft
PS3_Master 06-16-2006, 09:25 PM http://www.ps3court.com/images/360_logo.jpgAs many PlayStation gamers already know, Sony would like everyone to think of its console as a Computer rather then a gaming console. Wether it is a Computer, a Gaming Console or a supped up Gaming Console is yet to be determined but either way, the marketing strategy is sure to draw lots of attention to the Next Gen console and hopefully some business from Microsoft and Nintendo.
European Xbox 360 chief, Neil Thompson took a pot shot at the recent words from Sony calling the PS3 console nothing more then a “Next Generation DVD Player”
"I think [Sony] has missed the ball, in that it’s not really a next-generation games player – it’s a next-generation DVD player. For us, that’s great news, because we think we make the next-generation games console. We’ve got the content to back that up, we’ve got Xbox Live to back that up, we’ve got price-points that are very compelling.”
Neil Thompson also added in a few words regarding Sony’s track record for past technologies, in an attempt to discredit the console maker.
“If gamers are desperate to get the next-generation DVD player, then they’ll start considering Blu-ray and the PS3. But Sony is the company that brought us Betamax, MiniDisc and UMD – I’m not convinced people today will go and bet the farm on buying a Blu-ray disc.”

i'm feeling sorry for Sony. they don't seem to realize most gamers won't buy an expensive console, no matter how high-tech it is.
Tsura 07-04-2006, 11:39 AM Yea microsoft hit the nail on the head. sony will probably sell alot of their ps3s just as dvd players. the good thing for sony is that this is gonna be the format war they win if they do it right. its so much better thad hd-dvd in so many ways but if the price stays at $1000 or even $600 theyll probably lose like back in the day of betamax.
Splinter 07-06-2006, 12:14 AM What you have said is true but sony has an advantage in so many ways i mean you have to pay for a hard drive with xbox, but with ps3 all there consoles come with at least one hard drive of 20gb. And yeah its gonna be pricey but they all start like that, they come out with a massive price tag but eventually drop in price, anyway its not like the 360 was any cheaper when it came out and its half as good as the ps3.

They've been confirmed for $59.99
PlantPage55 10-29-2006, 08:42 PM I personally think it's a good deal...I mean, I can't argue with getting a Blu-Ray player for 400 dollars less than retail - as well as a system to play all my favorite Sony exclusives on!
Expensive...sure...but still a good deal
yokofox33 10-29-2006, 08:52 PM It is a decent deal considering Blue Rays players are mad expensive. The PS3 is way more than a Blue Ray player. I like Micorsoft and the Xbox, but come on people, the PS3 is gonna be awesome...as well as the Wii.
lilninja 10-30-2006, 10:05 AM How much do normal blue-ray players cost?
PlantPage55 10-30-2006, 10:13 AM The ones that Best Buy advertises are no less expensive than $999.99!!!
lilninja 10-30-2006, 10:13 AM WHAT!?!? Why doesn't everyone get a ps3 then?
PlantPage55 10-30-2006, 12:04 PM Some people really object to the idea that the video game system is so expensive because there is a DVD player in it, when they don't necessarily WANT a movie player...they want a video game system.
They forget that the capacity of the Blu-Ray disc will open up a lot of space for bigger video game experiences.
I, on the other hand, love the idea that I get a cheap way to play high tech quality movies AND play cutting edge video games.
Tsura 10-31-2006, 09:50 PM WHAT!?!? Why doesn't everyone get a ps3 then?
well thats why theres gonna be an even bigger shortage. cause now people who want a bluray will go for the ps3 just for the bluray player.
PlantPage55 10-31-2006, 10:03 PM I wonder what Blu-Ray player sales are like right now?
yokofox33 11-01-2006, 08:20 AM I would like to know as well. I wonder if people who want one will take the PS3 instead just for the price difference. Plus it does give them the opportunity for gaming and such. I really haven't heard much of Blu-Ray other than the PS3, so I would like to know how well regular players are selling.
