As the battle over disk formats continues, Microsoft came out with some extremely surprising comments at the Consumer Electronics show today. When asked about Microsoft’s stance on Blu-Ray in the event of HD DVD’s failure, Albert Penello – Xbox Hardware Manager stated “It should be consumer choice; and if that’s the way they vote, that’s something we’ll have to consider."
Microsoft does not believe the jump by Time Warner and Warner Bro’s to Blu-Ray from HD DVD will effect the Xbox 360 very much "I fundamentally don’t think ... this has a significant impact on Xbox 360 versus (Sony’s) PlayStation 3."
Sony’s PS3 was built around their Blu-Ray device in the hopes it would give it an extra push in the format war against Toshiba’s HD DVD. The Xbox 380 has support for HD DVD’s through an external plugin device sold serpeately from the console. In the past few weeks a number of large home movie distrobution companies have dropped their contracts with HD DVD in favor of signing Blu-Ray.
"With the PlayStation 2, DVD was a big part in the beginning, but over time, people were not buying it as a DVD player after first year or two” Panello said. "I want consumers to have a voice in this and I think there are a lot of consumers who bought HD-DVD who are going to have a say in how this shakes out."
